Toronto police are investigating arson as the suspected cause in a number of overnight car fires.

A total of seven vehicles went up in flames overnight – five in the area of Church Street and The Esplanade and two in Yorkville, police said.

Police say one of the first fires was spotted shortly before 11 p.m. near Front Street East and Jarvis Street, where crews located a U-Haul truck in flames.

About six minutes later, another call came in from the area of Church and Front streets, where witnesses reported seeing a Chrysler vehicle on fire.

A green Chrysler minivan was the target of another fire located in the area early Monday morning and a red vehicle was reportedly seen fleeing the scene.

Other reports indicate that a fire broke out at a Toronto Community Housing complex at 55 The Esplanade, where several vehicles were found burning in an underground parking garage.

Two vehicles were also found burning in the Hazelton Lanes area.

Police said the fires are likely connected.

No one was injured and police have not yet provided a damage estimate.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office has been called in to investigate.
