A sexual assault in Newmarket Tuesday has police looking into whether there may be a serial prowler on the loose.

Details on Tuesday’s incident, which occurred in the area of Yonge Street and Green Lane at around 11:30 a.m., were not immediately provided.

Police have confirmed the suspect description is similar to that provided of a man wanted in connection with four previously linked incidents which have occurred in the area.

“Suspect is targeting females wearing headphones or distracted by their phone,” York Regional Police said in a tweet Tuesday afternoon. “Be aware of surroundings.

“We believe the suspect is spending time pacing the neighbourhood looking for victims. Call us if you spot anyone matching the description of the suspect in the area of Yonge/Bathurst/Green Lane/Davis.”

Other sexual assaults in Newmarket date back to Aug. 18.

According to police, a 19-year-old woman was grabbed by a man while walking down a pathway along the north fence of the Upper Canada Mall parking lot at around 6 p.m.

The victim, who was grabbed on the buttocks, was not injured.

On Sept. 8, at around 7:30 a.m., a 34-year-old woman was also grabbed on the buttocks while walking on a sidewalk in the mall’s parking lot from Matthew Boyd Crescent.

The third incident at the mall occurred later that day at around 2:30 p.m. This time, a 17-year-old girl was walking north from the mall on Gail Park Crescent when she was similarly grabbed on the buttocks.

The fourth incident took place Sept. 25.

According to police, an 18-year-old woman was walking on Aspenwood Drive when she was approached by a man, who forced her to the ground and attempted to remove her clothing.

The attack was interrupted after a passerby frightened the attacker away, police said. The victim was not seriously injured.

In a release issued earlier this month, police said they believe the same man is responsible for the four assaults, and may be targeting “small-structured, thin females who may be distracted by using their mobile phones or listening to music through headphones.”

The suspect is described as white, 20 to 25 years old, approximately five-foot-five, 125 to 130 pounds, with a thin build. He appears to pace back and forth before approaching victims and walks with a slight limp, police said.
