Classes may be on hold in Peel Region as secondary school teachers walk the picket lines but at least one rite of passage won’t be affected by the ongoing strike.

According to Peel District School Board Spokesperson Anne-Marie Brown, proms will go on as scheduled later this spring with board volunteers and school administrators providing supervision should the strike still be in effect.

The news comes hours after nearly 4,000 teachers officially walked off the job in Peel Region, resulting in the cancellation of classes and extracurricular activities for all Grade 9 to 12 students in the Peel District School Board.

The Peel District School Board is the first Ontario school board to make it clear that all proms will go on as planned, regardless of potential labour action.

The chair of the Durham District School Board, where teachers are also on strike, previously told CP24 that major extracurricular events, such as proms, would be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Most proms are held in May.
