Protesters rallied outside the U.S. Consulate on University Avenue Tuesday evening, one day after a grand jury decided not to press charges against a Missouri police officer in the fatal shooting of Michael Brown.
The protest, which was dubbed “Black Lives Matter,” began at 6 p.m. and was billed as a “peaceful” and “family friendly” event by organizers.
“Mike Brown was murdered. And the state let his murderer get away without even an indictment,” a post on a Facebook page promoting the protest read. “Black people are murdered by the state in our local communities regularly and systematically. And their murderers get away with it on a regular basis. 24 hours following a no indictment verdict we will meet in solidarity to protest.”
Roughly 600 to 700 attendees took part in the peaceful rally, which ended at 8 p.m.
Speaking with CP24 on Tuesday afternoon, Toronto police spokesperson Mark Pugash confirmed that officers would be on hand to direct traffic and ensure that the protest was peaceful.
Protests in Ferguson turned violent on Monday night, resulting in widespread vandalism and the destruction of 12 commercial buildings by deliberately set fires. However, the protests held in other cities across the U.S. remained mostly peaceful.
