Rogers customers across the country were unable to make phone calls or send text messages for hours as a technical problem caused a massive service outage.

In a series of tweets sent shortly before midnight Wednesday, the company confirmed that service has been fully restored after being down for hours.

“Wireless voice and SMS services are fully restored. We continue to investigate the root cause. We apologize to our customers and thank them for their patience,” the company said.

The tweets also advised customers still experiencing technical problems to restart their devices.

Rogers customers across the country reported early Wednesday evening that they don’t have access to voice or texting service.

Fido and Chatr, which use the Rogers network, were also affected by the outage, the companies said on their Twitter feeds.

Rogers confirmed in an earlier tweet Wednesday that some customers in Ontario and Quebec were being affected by a service interruption. The company later confirmed that it was dealing with a nation-wide interruption to voice and some texting service for its wireless customers.

“We are experiencing a wireless outage nationally, affecting voice and some SMS service. We apologize & are working to resolve it ASAP,” the company said in a tweet from its customer service account.

Data services did not appear to be affected, a Rogers spokesperson told CP24 in an email.

As social media set ablaze with comments from angry customers, Toronto police also took to Twitter to alert people to the service interruption in case Rogers customers need to make emergency calls.

Police in Toronto and other jurisdictions advised people to use land lines or pay phones to call 911 in case of an emergency.

A number of cab companies also reported that they couldn’t process debit and credit payments because of the outage.

Rogers did not say how many customers were affected by the outage.
