Friends have identified Amaria Diljohn as the 14-year-old girl who was struck by a TTC bus and killed while trying to cross an intersection in Scarborough.

Toronto police say the teen was attempting to cross Neilson Road around 5:40 p.m. Friday when a northbound bus turned right onto Finch Avenue and struck her in the roadway. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 27-year-old bus driver, who police have now spoken with, did not remain at the scene. It is not known if he was aware that he had struck the girl when he drove away.

"That is part of the investigation and it is something that probably won't be determined for a while yet," Const. Clint Stibbe told CP24. "If anybody does have any information that they can add to this particular situation we would appreciate it because as you can imagine the loss of a child, especially around Christmas time, is devastating for the family and really devastating for everyone involved."

The driver has not been taken into custody and no charges have been laid as yet.

Police are looking to speak with six witnesses who rode the 133 Neilson bus on Friday between 5:15 p.m. and 6 p.m. These six passengers were seen in security camera footage from the bus and are believed to be regulars on the route.

The TTC released a statement to say it is "co-operating fully" with the investigation and has provided police with surveillance video from the bus.

The TTC also expressed condolences to the victim’s family.

"The thoughts and prayers of everyone at the TTC go out to the girl's family during this very difficult time," the statement read.
