An elderly woman was airlifted to hospital after being pulled from a burning apartment in Newmarket without vital signs Monday morning.

Firefighters were called to four-storey seniors’ residence on Stonehaven Avenue in Newmarket around 8:30 a.m. after a fire broke out at a unit on the third floor.

When they arrived, they found a 74-year-old woman without vital signs slumped over a walker in the hallway. Firefighters and paramedics were able to revive her after performing CPR. The woman was then airlifted to hospital in Toronto.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze quickly.

Speaking with CP24, firefighters said the fire appears to have started in a large chair in the living room.

Neighbours told CP24 that the woman had been in poor health and was a smoker.

Her pet dog was also in the building at the time of the fire, but was uninjured.

The Ontario Fire Marshall’s Office has been called in to investigate the blaze.
