A woman who fell to her death from the sixth floor of a Downsview apartment building last week is being remembered as a warm, loving mother and friend who put others ahead of herself.

Mimi Luong, 30, was critically injured after falling from the balcony of her sixth floor apartment at Sheppard Avenue and Allen Road around 2:30 a.m. on Aug. 20. She died in hospital a short time later.

“She was one of those people you would meet and instantly fall in love with,” said Deborah Jules, a friend and supervisor at Christie Ossington Neighbourhood Centre where Luong worked. “She hugged everyone she came across in the drop-in program. The seniors, if you saw her interact with the seniors it was amazing. She had a hug for everybody.”

Jules also described Luong as genuine and easy-going.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise money to pay for Luong’s funeral costs, as well as to start a college fund for her young son.

“She always spoke highly of him (her son),” Jules said. “She loved her son to death.”

A number of other friends and family have also reached out to express their grief. A small memorial has sprung up outside the building where Luong fell, with well-wishers leaving flowers and notes.

“It’s so sad because I would always say ‘Mimi, you’re too huggy’ and that’s what I miss most about her,” Jules said.

Police still investigating fall

Exclusive surveillance video obtained by CP24 showed two men rushing to Luong following the fall, with one of the men carrying her back into the building in a bear hug. Police have confirmed that the man seen carrying Luong away was her boyfriend.

Another exclusive video shows Luong’s estranged husband and boyfriend arguing and throwing punches in the lobby of the apartment building in May.

Police say they are continuing to investigate the circumstances around Luong’s fall.
