The province’s Special Investigations Unit has invoked their mandate after a man was shot behind a Scarborough mall Thursday afternoon.

It happened behind the Wal-Mart at the Agincourt Mall near Kennedy Road and Sheppard Avenue at around 4:45 p.m.

According to the SIU, officers responded to reports of a man armed with a knife.

At the scene, an “altercation” occurred in which the 40-year-old man was shot.

Two separate witnesses at the scene told CTV News that they heard three shots ring out.

He was rushed to hospital via emergency run with life-threatening injuries, paramedics said.

Two Wal-Mart employees also confirmed to CTV News that the man worked in the food department of the store.

Reached by CP24 on Thursday evening, a spokesperson for Wal-Mart refused to comment, citing the ongoing police investigation.

The SIU is called in to investigate whenever police are involved in incidents resulting in death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
