The Special Investigations Unit has been called in after a 28-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound following an interaction with police in the city’s west end early Saturday morning.

According to the SIU, officers responded to the scene on Epping Street near The Westway and Islington Avenue at around 7:40 a.m. after receiving reports that a man was breaking into cars in the area.

An interaction between police and the man then ensued and the man sustained a single gunshot wound as a result.

According to EMS, the man was taken to hospital in serious condition.

The SIU has assigned four investigators and two forensic investigators to the case.

The SIU is an arms-length agency that investigates incidents involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
