Toronto police say Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has invoked its mandate after a 45-year-old man died in Toronto’s Eglinton West neighbourhood just before midnight Saturday.

The incident occurred on Gilbert Avenue, near the intersection of Eglinton Avenue West and Caledonia Road. Police said they were called to the scene because of reports of a man wielding a hammer.

The SIU said in a news release that Toronto Police were called to the Gilbert Avenue apartment building just after midnight Sunday. The man interacted with police and one officer fired his weapon. The man was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics at 12:26 a.m.

The man has since been identified by the SIU as Andrew Loku of Toronto.

The SIU says it has designated one subject officer and five witness officers so far in its investigation. It has assigned three investigators and three forensic investigators to the case.

Susan Schofield, who lives in the same building as the deceased man told CP24 she heard a series of loud bangs before police arrived, and later heard a gunshot.

Steve Lurie, executive director of the Canadian Mental Health Association's Toronto branch told CTV News a number of tenants in the apartment building where the death occurred receive assistance from CMHA.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the SIU at 1-800-787-8529, ext. 1965.

The SIU is called to investigate all incidents involving police that lead to serious injury, death or allegations of sexual assault.
