A Peel Regional police officer was rushed to a trauma centre with serious injuries after being struck by a cruiser in Mississauga on Sunday morning.

The incident happened on Mississauga Road between Eglinton Avenue West and Erin Centre Boulevard at around 9:50 a.m.

Special Investigations Unit spokesperson Jason Gennaro said a male officer was conducting a paid duty assignment conducting traffic at the intersection when he was struck by a police cruiser.

Gennaro said a number of cruisers were responding to a robbery at a store nearby at Queen Street and Kerr Street at around the same time.

The officer was taken to Sunnybrook Hospital for treatment.

A witness at the scene said the officer flew up to two metres into the air when he was struck and then fell to the ground, hitting his head on the hood of the police cruiser on his way down.

The SIU is asking anyone in the area to come forward to investigators, including churchgoers who were nearby at the time.

The SIU investigates all reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or an allegation of sexual assault.
