The Special Investigations Unit has invoked their mandate after police fatally shot a man outside a North York shelter for women in crisis on Friday night.

It happened in front of the shelter on Bayview Avenue near Steeles Avenue at around 10 p.m.

According to the SIU, police became involved with a man outside the residence, at which point a confrontation took place and several officers discharged their weapons.

The man was rushed to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre following the shooting but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

A source has told CP24 that the incident related to an armed robbery and that the man pointed a gun at police prior to be shot.

A family friend and other sources confirm to CP24 the man who was shot was Devon Lafleur of Ottawa.

The SIU has designated three subject officers and nine witness officers as part of their investigation. Four investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.

Bayview Avenue was closed from Newton Drive to Brenham Crescent but has since reopened.

The SIU is an arm's length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
