The Special Investigations Unit has been called in after a man died in Toronto police custody Tuesday night.

The circumstances around the death are unclear however police say officers were called to the area of Wellesley and Yonge streets shortly before 10 p.m. last night after a man was reportedly found lying on the street with serious injuries.

When officers tried to assist the man and move him over to the sidewalk, he went into medical distress.

He was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Yonge Street was shut down between Maitland and Wellesley streets for the police investigation however the area has since reopened.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that is called in to investigate whenever police are involved in a death, serious injury or allegation of sexual assault.
