A man is dead and Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating after an incident involving a car that drove through a fence in the area of Oakwood Avenue and Earnscliffe Road Wednesday morning.

A staff sergeant from Toronto police 13 Division said a car went into a fence and lodged itself in the back porch of a home on Earnscliffe Road sometime after 1:46 a.m. Wednesday. The driver of the car abandoned it a short while after and fled to a driveway on Oakwood Avenue.

The SIU said the man was arrested and put in handcuffs, and then went into "medical distress."

CPR was performed on the driver and he was later taken to Sunnybrook Hospital, where was pronounced dead.

Numerous police officers and cruisers could be seen on Earnscliffe and at a related scene about 50 metres away. An SIU truck arrived on scene just before 6 a.m.

The SIU has assigned five investigators and three forensic investigators to the case.

The Special Investigations Unit is called whenever police are involved in an incident with a member of the public that leads to death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
