There are numerous reports of a meteor sighting in southern Ontario Sunday evening.

Social media was set ablaze shortly before 4:30 p.m. as people from across the province starting tweeting that they had spotted an object shooting through the sky.

There were reports of the object from Toronto, Whitby, Bowmanville, Peterborough and numerous other areas.

“Saw one on Highway 2 at Lakeridge in Whitby!” Twitter user @monicageller69 said.

“My husband saw it in Bowmanville,” wrote @cjvandyk05.

Some pictures posted to twitter showed what observers described as the tail of the object, with a trail of white smoke against a blue sky.

Peterborough resident Sherry Adams told CP24 that although she didn't see the so-called meteor, she heard a very loud bang at the time.

"It was like the worst thunder that you can imagine and multiple that by about 10," she said.

"My cat went scurrying."

Adams said after the loud noise, she and other people in her apartment building went to open their doors to see what had happened.

"There was no lighting, there was no warning," she said.

"I didn't really know what to do."

There were no immediate confirmations of a meteor by officials as of Sunday evening.
