The intersection of Spadina Avenue and Dundas Street West will be partially closed to traffic for the next two weeks for streetcar track and platform upgrades to make way for the TTC's fleet of new low-floor streetcars.

Traffic will be down to one lane in each direction during the partial closure, which will last until July 28.

After that, the traffic situation will get worse, as the intersection will be shut down entirely for two weeks. The full closure will occur between July 28 and Aug. 11.

Eastbound traffic on Dundas approaching Spadina will be detoured at Bathurst Street, while westbound traffic on Dundas approaching Spadina will be diverted at University Avenue.

Traffic on northbound Spadina will be detoured at Queen Street West. Southbound motorists will be forced off Spadina at College Street.

The city is suggesting motorists use College or Queen streets as alternate routes for east-west traffic, and Bathurst or University for north-south traffic.

TTC service disrupted

The work will affect the 505 Dundas and 510 Spadina streetcars.

From Monday to Aug. 11, the 505 Dundas streetcars will divert in both directions via McCaul Street, College and Bathurst.

From Monday to Aug. 30, the 510 Spadina streetcars will be replaced by buses with the following service adjustments:

July 14 to 28: The 510 Spadina buses will operate through the intersection, with one lane open in each direction.

July 28 to Aug. 11: With the intersection closed to all traffic, the 510 Spadina bus service will split into two portions: the north portion will operate between Spadina Station and Baldwin Street, while the south portion will operate between Sullivan Street and Queens Quay, the TTC says. Customers travelling the length of the route will have to exit and walk between Baldwin and Sullivan streets.

Aug. 11 to 30: One southbound lane and one northbound lane will re-open on Spadina, allowing the 510 Spadina buses to operate through the intersection. The 505 Dundas streetcar will return to its normal route.

When the 510 Spadina streetcar returns to its normal route Aug. 31, the new streetcars will be operating.

People will still be able to access businesses at the intersection and a safety barricade will be placed around all four sides of the intersection to protect pedestrians from the construction work, the city says.
