Toronto police say a 21-year-old man is facing fraud charges after he allegedly duped people in to buying empty iPhone 6 boxes.
According to police, on Jan. 17, 2016, a 20-year-old man met with another man in the area of Islington Avenue and Dixon Road after seeing a posting on kijiji advertising the sale of an iPhone 6.
The 20-year-old man gave the seller cash for what was supposed to be an iPhone 6 in a sealed box.
But when the buyer opened the box, the only thing inside was rice.
Police say a second man fell victim to the same scam on Feb. 6 after meeting with a man in the area of Albion Road and Kipling Avenue.
A suspect was arrested in connection with both incidents on February 10, 2016.
Gyimah Andrews Boateng, 21, of Toronto, is facing two counts of fraud under $5,000, two counts of false pretence under $5,000, and two counts of breaching a court order.
Investigators say there may be more victims and ask anyone with information to call Det. Const. Sylwia Swider at 416-808-2329 or sylwia.swider@torontopolice.on.ca. Anonymous tips can be made to Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
