A suspicious package snarled traffic at a major GTA intersection straddling Toronto and Markham for hours Wednesday.

An abandoned suitcase was discovered behind a newspaper box near the intersection of Steeles Avenue and Victoria Park Avenue at around 11:30 a.m., York Regional Police said.

The Durham Police Emergency Response Unit sent a robot to the scene to help investigate the suitcase.

Police eventually determined that there was nothing but dirty laundry inside the case, YRP said.

As a precaution, Victoria Park Avenue was closed both ways from Steeles Avenue north to Torbay Road and TTC buses were diverted to avoid the area. The roads eventually reopened around 3 p.m.
