A teenager is facing a string of charges after a male suspect robbed a Pickering convenience store at knifepoint and then stabbed a passerby who tried to prevent him from fleeing the scene.

Police say the suspect entered Yoon’s Convenience on Kingston Road at around 6 p.m. on Thursday and demanded an employee hand over the contents of the cash register.

The suspect then allegedly jumped over the counter and attempted to break open the register himself.

At that point, police say the employee got into a brief struggle with the suspect before he managed to escape the store.

The employee and another man then held the door to the store closed and awaited the arrival of police; however the suspect allegedly located a golf club and used it to shatter the glass door.

Police say the suspect then took his knife and used it to stab the hand of the male witness through the broken glass.

The suspect was subsequently arrested by officers following a brief struggle.

The 16-year-old, who cannot be identified under the terms of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is facing 8 charges, including assault with a weapon and assault causing bodily harm.

The male witness was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
