A teenaged boy has been charged with attempted murder in connection with a fatal shooting that left two high school students dead earlier this month, Toronto police say.

Zaid Yousif, a 17-year-old student at Don Bosco Catholic Secondary School, and Michael Menjivar, a 15-year-old student at James Cardinal McGuigan Catholic High School, were gunned down behind the School of Experiential Education, near Islington Avenue and Dixon Road, at around 12:30 p.m. on Oct. 6.

Over the past two weeks, police have released images of a several “persons of interest” but the 17-year-old suspect is the first to be arrested in connection with the homicide investigation.

The teen, who cannot be identified under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, has also been charged with pointing a firearm, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace, possession of a firearm without a valid licence, possession of a firearm without a permit and failing to comply with a court order.

Police say the accused made a court appearance at 2201 Finch Ave. W. this morning for a bail hearing but did not disclose whether he is still in police custody.
