A Toronto man who celebrated an early wedding with his partner several months ago after discovering that he was terminally ill has passed away.

Solomon Chau was 26 years old. He passed away Monday according to a post by his wife, Jennifer Carter, on social media.

“Today, the most incredible person I've ever known passed away after an 8 month battle with cancer,” Carter wrote in her post Monday. “Sol fought long and hard and gave it his all. His optimism and sense of humour kept both me, and those closest to us, at least moderately sane throughout all of this. For that, we'll never be able to thank him enough.”

In December, Chau, originally from St. Catharine’s, was diagnosed with liver cancer and had surgery to remove the tumor. Following the surgery, the otherwise healthy young man went on planning his wedding with Carter, the pair planning to marry in August.

But in March, Chau was rushed to an emergency room after experiencing sharp pain in his stomach. Doctors discovered that the cancer had spread and estimated Chau had just months to live.

Determined to follow through with their marriage and make the most of their time, the couple moved their wedding up to April.

Through a GoFundMe page set up by family and friends, more than $50,000 was raised to help the couple pull off a dream wedding at Casa Loma ahead of schedule.

Talking about her husband on social media Monday, Carter recalled his tenacity and optimism.

“He fought until his very last breath, and had all of his doctors shaking their heads in disbelief at just how much he could handle. I don't want to imagine a world without Sol in it; it sure as hell won't be as bright,” she wrote.

She added the couple’s journey has served as a lesson about the importance of enjoying each day.

“I'm forever in your debt for showing me what love really is all about, and we learned more about it at 26 than some will learn in a lifetime,” Carter wrote. “You and I should have been able to live the next 60 years of our lives together, but I'm still forever thankful that God gave us 8 incredible years.”

Carter said details about a memorial service will be posted in the days to come.
