Three teens were arrested, including a 16-year-old girl who was pepper-sprayed by police, after fights and bad behaviour shut down the CNE several hours early last night.

The unruly behavior came as “Youth Day” was nearing its end. The promotional event allowed people under 17 years old to get in for just $6.

Video footage from the scene showed fights breaking out amid heated groups of young people at the CNE’s midway and police had to be brought in to disperse the crowd.

“It was a very scary scene because you had to run really fast so that people wouldn’t trample you,” one girl told CP24 outside the event.

Officials decided to shut down the event in consultation with Toronto police at around 9 p.m.

No one was seriously injured in the ruckus.

However police said that a 16-year-old girl was pepper-sprayed by police after allegedly assaulting an officer.

According to police, officers were making an arrest at around 8:45p.m. when a large group of people surrounded them. The officers tried to leave the fairway through the vendors' area, but were followed by the crowd, including a girl who they say pushed a barricade toward them.

Police say the girl then tried several times to punch one of the officers. She was eventually arrested for failing to comply with police orders to stay back and for behaving aggressively, police said.

She attempted to escape into the crowd by kicking the officers, at which point she was pepper sprayed, police said. The girl was treated for the spray and eventually charged with two counts of assaulting an officer and one count of obstructing a police officer.

Two other teens were also arrested. Toronto police said a 16-year-old boy was arrested for assault and failing to comply with conditions and a 17-year-old boy was arrested for drug possession.

“The behavior that we saw was very disappointing,” CNE general Manager Virginia Ludy told CP24. “It’s not something that I would expect of the youth of Toronto. When we have to shut down an event of this size and scope because of the behavior of a few, it’s very disappointing.”

This is the second year in a row that Youth Day has been shut down early because bad behaviour.

Ludy said the CNE will be reviewing how to proceed with the event in the future in light of how it ended last night.
