Some unsettled weather is expected to hit the GTA this afternoon and a severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for several areas around Toronto.

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Halton Hills, Milton, Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon.

An advisory issued by the national weather agency says that thunderstorms could produce rainfall amounts of 50 millimetres or more in some areas.

"Scattered thunderstorms are developing to the north and west of Lake Ontario. These thunderstorms will be very slow moving this afternoon... small hail and strong wind gusts are also possible with these thunderstorms," Environment Canada's advisory reads.

"Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. If visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance."

A special weather statement was also issued for the City of Toronto as a warm and humid air mass settles into southern Ontario.

Temperatures are expected to hover around 30 C this weekend with humidex values in the high 30s.

"While heat warning criteria is not expected to be reached in most places, this is the first very warm and humid weather of the season. These conditions pose a health risk when you are not used to the heat," a statement from Environment Canada reads.
