A three-year-old boy has been rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries and an adult male has been transported with serious injuries following a single vehicle crash in midtown Toronto.

Police say a car collided with a pole near Roselawn Avenue and Avenue Road just before 8:30 a.m.

There were a total of three people inside the car at the time, however only two sustained injuries.

One man who came upon the scene told CP24 that the driver of the car appeared OK and took the child to an awaiting ambulance to get him help.

Const. Clint Stibbe said it appears the toddler was wearing a seat belt but not in a car seat at the time of the collision.

A male passenger, however, was initially unconscious at the scene and was pulled from the vehicle by several Good Samaritans. That passenger has since been identified as the child's father.

“When I found him he was up against the windshield. He was unconscious. He was breathing luckily but his face was right in the smoke,” the man said. “We went around, broke open the windows, got him out as carefully as we could and put him on the ground and waited for emergency services top come help.”

Police looking for possible witness vehicle

Members of the Traffic Services collision reconstruction unit are currently on scene collecting evidence.

Police are also looking to speak with the driver and occupants of a black vehicle with a roof rack that may have witnessed the crash while travelling northbound on Avenue Road. The vehicle is described as a Ford.

“We want to speak with them with respect to what they may have seen at the time of the collision,” Arthur Lane of Traffic Services told CP24 at the scene. “They may be witnesses which would help us solve this particular crash.”

Avenue Road was closed in both directions from Roselawn Avenue to Kelway Boulevard but reopened shortly before 1 p.m.
