Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair has built a career off busting bad guys, but on Saturday he busted a move instead.

Though the Caribbean Carnival doesn’t officially get underway until Tuesday, Blair gave Torontonians a sneak peak of what they might see during the two-week celebration, taking to a stage at Seneca College’s Newham campus and dancing alongside two women clad in bright coloured Caribbean style dresses.

The impromptu boogie was part of the Toronto Police Services annual Caribbean Carnival kick-off celebration.

This year’s event, which includes a full day of music, dancing and interaction between officers and community members, is titled “Strengthening Community Ties”.

It got underway at around 10 a.m. and is expected to wrap up by 4 p.m.

It’s being attended by a number of special guests, including Denver Broncos offensive lineman Orlando Franklin.

“The theme for this very special event is to strengthen community ties and what better way to do that than through a shared enjoyment of art and culture, and performance,” Toronto Police Services Board Chair Alok Muckerjee said. “The Caribbean Carnival is a celebration of the vibrancy, richness and colourfulness of the kaleidoscopic culture that characterizes our city and our country today. The powerful spirit of this festival can be felt throughout this city in all of our neighbourhoods and celebrations such as this one are an excellent opportunity to demonstrate respect, honour and admiration for the variety of rich and wonderful cultures that add brilliant colour and life to our city.”

Prior to showing off his dance moves, Blair spoke to those in attendance and called the Caribbean Carnival “a very special time”.
