The Toronto Public Library Board and 2,200 library workers have reached a tentative four-year contract, the union confirmed Monday morning.

The news comes after the two sides agreed to continue talks past the 12:01 a.m. strike deadline today.

In a written statement issued Monday morning, Maureen O'Reilly, the president of CUPE Local 4948, which represents library workers, called the latest round of bargainning "difficult."

"Our bargaining committee has secured a deal which we believe addresses some of our concerns and allows Toronto’s library workers to continue to provide great services in the city’s 100 branches," O'Reilly's statement read.

The union went on to say that ratification would be scheduled in the coming days and that until members have viewed and voted on the contract, the union will not be making any further public comments about the deal.

The union and the board have been negotiating since February and some of the main sticking points were believed to be cuts to staff funding and job security for part time workers.
