TORONTO - A Toronto man is facing a string of charges in connection with a bankruptcy fraud investigation.

RCMP say the charges are related to allegations of fraud and abuse of the bankruptcy process, which they say "is intended for the honest but unfortunate debtor."

An investigation began in October after authorities were contacted with allegations of wrongdoing.

It is alleged that the man did not answer fully and truthfully all questions put to him during his bankruptcy examinations and neglected to identify a major creditor as well as several assets.

It's also alleged the man continued to conduct business after filing bankruptcy without giving proper notification and without advising the creditor he was conducting business and was an undischarged bankrupt.

Alex Petrou, 57, faces 18 charges under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act and the Criminal Code.
