Toronto has broken a single-day temperature record but don’t get too excited; it’s not the good kind.

The temperature dipped to – 6.9 C at Pearson International Airport early Wednesday morning, breaking a 34-year-old record (-5.6 C) for this day.

According to Environment Canada, the temperature is the coldest one ever recorded on April 16 in 75 years of record keeping.

The frigid conditions came at the tail end of a cold front that brought a late dose of winter to the region on Tuesday.

Luckily, temperatures are expected to return to more seasonal levels over the next few days with a high of 5 C predicted for today, a high of 8 C called for on Thursday and a high of 12 C predicted for Friday.

The weekend temperatures will be even more spring-like with a high of 15 C on Saturday and a high of 16 C on Sunday, though rain is expected for both days.
