A 54-year-old Toronto woman is dead after the vehicle she was travelling in collided with a concrete median on Highway 401, east of Cambridge Sunday afternoon.

The crash happened in the westbound lanes of Highway 401 around 3 p.m., Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release Sunday evening.

Police said a westbound silver Honda CRV carrying four people was just west of Highway 6 when it left the road and veered into a ditch before returning to the highway and slamming into a concrete median.

The woman, who was sitting in the rear of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The three other occupants of the vehicle were taken to hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Police shut down the westbound lanes of Highway 401 for several hours as they investigated the crash. The road reopened around 6:30 p.m.

OPP are now looking to speak with any witnesses who saw the collision.
