Doug Ford’s unexpected entrance into the mayoral race has done little to change the minds of prospective voters, according to a new poll from Ipsos-Reid.

The online poll of 596 Torontonians found that 43 per cent of respondents say they will vote for John Tory if the election were held tomorrow while 29 per cent plan to cast a ballot for Olivia Chow and 28 per cent say they will support Doug Ford.

Tory’s support was particularly strong among those in North York (52 per cent) and Old Toronto (45 per cent) while Doug Ford was strong in Etobicoke (40 per cent) and Scarborough (30 per cent).

Chow, meanwhile, tended to poll better among women (36 per cent) and those between the ages of 18 and 34 (44 per cent).

The results are nearly identical to a Nanos Research poll conducted two weeks ago when Rob Ford was still a candidate, suggesting much of Ford Nation has given their support to Doug Ford after the mayor withdrew from the race in the wake of doctors discovering a tumour in his abdomen last week.

The poll also asked respondents whether they believed it was appropriate for Doug to take his brother’s place and a slim majority (53 per cent) said it was.

In a release accompanying the poll, Ipsos-Reid said the results suggest the race is now “John Tory’s to lose."

The poll, which was conducted between Friday and today, is considered accurate to within 4.9 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
