Federal Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau is hoping that a big win for the Ontario Liberals in last week’s provincial election may bolster his party’s chances of winning two upcoming byelections in Toronto.

Fresh off the provincial party’s big win Thursday, Trudeau visited Toronto to canvass with local candidates Monday.

Speaking ahead of a stop in Trinity-Spadina, he sat down for an interview with CP24 alongside the Liberal candidate in the riding, Adam Vaughan.

“I think what people want is governments that are going to work together,” Trudeau said. “We have a government in Ottawa that’s picking fights with different levels of government and we need to be collaborating to serve citizens.”

Though it has long been considered an NDP stronghold, the Liberals have made an impression in Trinity-Spadina.

Last week, Ontario Liberal candidate Han Dong managed to upset New Democrat Rosario Marchese, who has been a member of provincial parliament for 24 years.

Speaking to the Liberals’ provincial win, Vaughan echoed Trudeau’s idea that the area would be best served by representatives who get along.

“The opportunity here is to select a team to represent Trinity-Spadina,” Vaughan said. “We have a really great opportunity with three elections in Trinity-Spadina this year to make sure that your local councillor, your member of provincial parliament and hopefully myself up in Ottawa work together.”

He added that “momentum is always easier to build on than to reverse.”

Vaughan is campaigning to win the seat vacated by former NDP MP Olivia Chow. Chow stepped down earlier this year to launch her mayoralty bid. Vaughan is running against NDP candidate Joe Cressy and Conservative candidate Benjamin Sharma.

Speaking with CP24 Thursday afternoon, Cressy said Trudeau is “not that impressive” in the House of Commons and said the best way to stand up to Stephen Harper is to elect an NDP government.

“What I hear most at the doors these days is ‘how can we take on Stephen Harper every single day?’ And when people say that to you, the NDP and Tom Mulciar comes right front of mind,” Cressy said.

He also said public transit is the issue people seem to be most concerned about when he meets them at the door and said the NDP would work to provide sustainable funding for transit growth.

“It’s about our environment, it’s about our quality of life, but it’s also about our economy,” Cressy said.

Four federal byelections have been called for June 30, two of which are being held in the city. In addition to Trinity-Spadina, the Toronto riding of Scarborough-Agincourt is also up for grabs. Two other byelections are being held in Alberta – one in Fort McMurray–Athabasca and another in Macleod.
