Toronto Transit Commission CEO Andy Byford has confirmed that a fare hike is in fact on the horizon but the amount has not yet been determined.

Byford confirmed the news in a statement emailed to CP24 on Wednesday morning, saying that any fare increase would be up to the TTC board and would depend on the amount of subsidy the TTC is awarded. That amount, Byford said, is not yet clear.

In a report presented to members of the TTC budget committee last month, seven different fare options were outlined.

The options included raising the cash fare by 25 cents, increasing the cost of tokens, day passes and Metropasses to include average fare hikes of either five or ten cents, creating a single cash fare that would eliminate the discount currently given to students and seniors, or creating a single fare across the board that would eliminate student and senior discounts for Metropasses and day passes as well.

Byford previously said the fare increases are being considered as a way to cover a $95-million deficit in the commission’s budget.

The TTC board is meeting later today, however, Byford confirmed that the issue of increased fares is not on the agenda.
