A Toronto man was threatened at gunpoint in his own garage but police were quick to arrest two suspects in connection with the attempted robbery.

The man was approached as he drove into the garage of his home, located in the Royal York Road and Lawrence Avenue West area, on Jan. 6. Two men wearing black bandanas approached him and the man told police that one of them was carrying a gun.

The men spoke to the driver through the car window, demanding he get out of the car. The driver managed to escape by reversing his vehicle and calling 911.

The suspects reportedly took off in a black vehicle.

Shortly before midnight that day, police arrested one suspect, identified as 24-year-old Omar Patterson of Markham, and charged him with robbery while armed with a firearm and disguise with intent. Shortly after midnight, a second suspect was arrested. Ryan Phillips, 27, of Markham has been charged with robbery while armed with a firearm, disguise with intent and failing to comply with probation.

While nothing was actually taken, police said a charge of robbery stands when someone violently threatens to rob a person.

Both suspects made an appearance in a Finch Avenue West courtroom Tuesday morning.
