Divers have recovered a second body after a tractor-trailer veered off Highway 401, crashed through a barrier and ended up submerged in the Nith River near Cambridge Tuesday morning.

It happened in the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 near Drumbo Road at around 11:40 a.m.

Police said they do not know what caused the tractor-trailer to leave the roadway.

Philip Belyew Sr., the president and CEO of the U.S. company that owns the truck, told CTV News he believed two people were on board as the vehicle made its way to Mississauga from Chicago.

The identities of the two people killed in the crash will not be released tonight, police said

Police said the recovery of the bodies was difficult due to the river’s cold temperature.

The truck was carrying computers and computer components. The cargo could be seen floating in the water following the crash.

All eastbound lanes on Highway 401 were closed near Highway 2 for several hours for the investigation.

The lanes were reopened shortly after 11 p.m.
