Two people have been taken to hospital, one in life-threatening condition, after a fire at a high-rise apartment building in North York on Tuesday afternoon.

According to Toronto Fire, the blaze began in a ninth floor unit at the building on Weston Road near Finch Avenue at around 1:50 p.m.

At the peak of the fire, nine trucks and 35 firefighters were on scene.

Paramedics say that one of the injured parties was rushed to a trauma centre with life-threatening injuries while the other was transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries.

The fire has since been put out but a cause has not yet been determined.

Due to the severity of the injuries, the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal has been notified and will conduct a full investigation.

Toronto Fire says that residents on the ninth floor of the building are not being allowed back into their units at this time.
