Durham Regional Police say two people suffered life-threatening injuries after a head-on crash north of Pickering early Saturday morning.

Shortly before 7 a.m., police say a black Acura sedan was heading eastbound on Concession Road 9 near Westney Road North when it collided head-on with a GMC SUV travelling westbound. Investigators say both vehicles had “extensive damage” following the collision.

The driver of the Acura, a 23-year-old Stouffville man, was extricated from his car and airlifted to a Toronto-area trauma centre. His passenger, a 21-year-old female, suffered minor injuries.

The 50-year-old woman driving the SUV was also airlifted to a trauma centre with critical injuries.

Members of Durham Regional Police’s traffic services branch were on scene for several hours to conduct and investigation and police say they believe alcohol was a factor in the collision.
