TORONTO - Unionized workers at the Globe and Mail newspaper have voted to approve a new contract.

Howard Law, director of the media sector at Unifor, which represents the workers, tweeted that workers have voted 85 per cent in favour of the deal.

Details of the agreement were not immediately available.

Unifor represents some 374 journalists, ad sales people and administrative staff at the media company.

The deal was reached Wednesday with the help of a mediator, just ahead of a strike deadline set by the union.

The Canadian Press is jointly owned by the parent companies of the Globe, the Toronto Star and Montreal's La Presse.
