Engineers are on scene and a number of area roads have been closed after an unstable antenna was reported above the Trump Tower early Monday morning.

According to Sgt. Kevin Hamilton, police have determined that there is a safety threat from the swaying antenna.

As a result Bay Street is closed to both vehicles and pedestrians from King Street to Richmond Street and Adelaide Street is also closed eastbound from York Street.

Police say that the closures will remain in effect until at least noon on Tuesday.

Due to the extended nature of the closure, police say they plan to bring in paid-duty officers to stand guard.

Engineers from both the City of Toronto and Trump Tower are on scene.

In a statement issued Monday afternoon, Mayor John Tory's office said safety is the city's "primary concern."

"The City of Toronto has directed the owners of Trump Tower to ensure the building does not pose a risk to the public and is awaiting confirmation from the building’s owners," the mayor's office said.

"The Mayor is very concerned about the impact on traffic in the downtown core and surrounding area. Every effort is being made to reopen affected roads as soon as it is safe."

The statement went on to say that Tory has asked for an investigation into the matter and will make sure those responsible for the disruption are "held accountable."
