The sister of one of two men fatally shot at an east-end McDonald’s restaurant over the weekend says she is still in shock from the news and trying to make sense of what led to her brother’s death.

In a release issued Monday, police identified the men as Ryan Hind, 40, and 25-year-old Donny Ouimette, both from Toronto.

They were shot shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday at a McDonald’s on Danforth Avenue near Coxwell Avenue after becoming involved in an altercation with an armed security guard who was picking up food at the restaurant.

Both were pronounced dead on scene. An autopsy has determined that they died from gunshot wounds.

Speaking with CP24 Monday afternoon, Hind’s sister said she was still trying to come to grips with what had happened.

“It’s very shocking,” Brenda Hind said. “We still don’t understand it.”

She said her brother was not a bully, but instead someone who stood up for and protected others.

“From what I’ve heard, Ryan was trying to get the gun away from the security guard,” Hind said. “So he was there basically trying to protect – and that’s what Ryan would do. He wouldn’t back down if he saw someone in trouble; he would always jump in and help.”

She said that police hadn’t provided her with much information.

“All they have told us so far is Ryan was a victim, and he was shot twice in the chest,” she said.

In a statement issued Monday night, GardaWorld confirmed that the security guard was employed by the company.

"We confirm that the security guard involved in the incident which occurred in Toronto on Saturday morning is employed by Intercon Security, a company recently acquired by GardaWorld,” it reads.

“Our employee was injured and is now recovering. GardaWorld is fully cooperating with law enforcement in the investigation of this incident.”

A lawyer for the guard has said the weapon was lawfully possessed. Police have called the case “unusual” and “complex.”

No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, and police said they are not looking for any outstanding suspects.
