Vince Hawkes has been named the new commissioner of the Ontario Provincial Police.

Hawkes, who currently serves as deputy commissioner, will take over the top job at the provincial police force March 29, the province announced Thursday.

“I am excited about the new challenge and humbled by the responsibility,” Hawkes said in a news release from the OPP Thursday.

Hawkes joined the OPP in 1984 and has held a variety of roles throughout his career. He holds degrees from the University of Ottawa and the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management. He has also been honoured with the Police Officer Exemplary Service Medal and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal.

“Having worked closely with Vince over many years, I know the OPP will be in good hands after I retire,” outgoing Commissioner Chris Lewis said in a statement. “I join many others in congratulating him on this very well deserved appointment.”

Hawkes will be the OPP’s 14th commissioner.
