A deadly shooting in Ottawa, Toronto’s municipal election and Canada’s Olympic hockey ambitions ranked among the events Canadians talked about most on Twitter in 2014.

The events appear on a list released this week by Twitter Canada ranking Canadian trends on the social media site.

The fatal shooting of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo at the National War Monument in Ottawa Oct. 22 ranked as the most tweeted about moment of 2014 in Canada, with Canadians tweeting en masse using the hashtags #StaySafeOttawa and #PrayforOttawa.

A manhunt following another tragic shooting that left three Mounties dead in Moncton, N.B. on June 4 ranked as the third most tweeted moment this year.

However, the list also showed that Canadians also came together online around celebrations this year, with the Number Two spot going to the Canadian men’s hockey team beating out Sweden to win gold at Sochi. The Canadian women’s hockey team’s gold-winning victory against Team USA at Sochi ranked Number Five.

A number of key games from the FIFA World Cup occupied three places on the list.

Toronto’s landmark municipal election on Oct. 27 took ninth spot, while Canada Day tweets on July 1 came in at Number 10.

But while Toronto’s election may have made the list of most tweeted about moments, it appears we came second on the list of the hottest Canadian city hashtags, coming in behind #Vancouver, which took the crown this year. Winnipeg, Edmonton and Montreal rounded out the list of fastest-rising hashtag trends for Canadian cities.

Bieber most followed Canadian

Still, a young man from Stratford, Ont. retained his title as Canada’s most followed person. Justin Bieber weighed in with 57.5 million Twitter followers in 2014. That’s more than double the followers of friend and second place holder Drake, who has 18.4 million. Other Canucks in the top five include Avril Lavigne, Jim Carrey and Carly Rae Jepson, all of whom have more than 10 million followers.

Bieber also nabbed the coveted Canadian Golden Tweet of 2014 – the single Twitter utterance by a Canadian that was retweeted the most.

“You are all worthy no matter what anyone says,” the pop star tweeted to his legions of fans on Jan. 24 shortly after a DUI arrest. “Be strong, God is with us all. My Beliebers changed my life. I will forever be grateful.”

The post was retweeted nearly 486,000 times and favourited more than 373,000 times.

Again, Drake took a distant second with 87,530 retweets for a post hinting at collaboration with Ty Dolla Sign and The Weeknd.

The Canadian Joint Delegation to NATO took third spot for most retweeted with a cheeky map posted to help Russian soldiers “who keep getting lost & ‘accidentally’ entering #Ukraine.” The post was retweeted 42,415 times.

A Seth Rogen tweet of a photoshopped Vogue cover that switched his head and pal James Franco’s with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West weighed in at fourth with 39,546 retweets.

Bell Let’s Talk Day took fifth spot. The corporate initiative donated five cents to mental health charities for every retweet. Twitter users retweeted the post nearly 37,000 times.

Twitter Canada also spotlighted Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s growing voice on Twitter this year.

In its release, the social media site noted that “Canada’s Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, uses the Twitter platform to give the world a sense of who he is as both a person and as Canada’s leader.”
