A woman was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after falling from an overpass into a live lane of traffic on Highway 401 in Port Hope Wednesday afternoon.

Ontario Provincial police said the woman fell onto the busy highway from the Cranberry Road overpass while attempting to take a picture shortly before 12:30 p.m.

Passing motorists stopped to help the woman and she was able to avoid being struck by any vehicles in the road.

She was airlifted to a trauma centre in Toronto with serious injuries, police said

Police closed down several westbound lanes of the highway for a few hours before determining that the fall was accidental.

All lanes of traffic had reopened as of 2:40 p.m.
