Police are appealing for witnesses after a 65-year-old woman was struck and killed by a vehicle in the city’s east end Saturday morning.

According to Const. Cliff Stibbe, the woman was walking south along a sidewalk on Birchmount Road near St. Clair Avenue when she was struck by a vehicle pulling out of a driveway at around 10:40 a.m.

The woman was initially trapped underneath the vehicle, however emergency crews were able to free her a short time later.

She was rushed to hospital in critical condition, but succumbed to her injuries upon arrival.

Traffic Services was called to the scene to investigate and Birchmount Road was closed at St. Clair Avenue as a result.

Police say the vehicle that struck the pedestrian was a 2005 Chevrolet Aveo driven by a 59-year-old woman.
