One woman is dead and another is in hospital after both were struck by a van in Scarborough late Thursday afternoon.

Reports of the pedestrian collision, on Brimley Road south of Lawrence Avenue, came in at around 5:30 p.m.

The women – both in their 60s – were struck by the southbound van as they crossed the road, police said.

“It was a serious motor vehicle collision,” Toronto police Sgt. Phillip Sinclair said of the incident.

One woman was pronounced dead on the scene.

The second patient was transported to hospital with serious injuries, paramedics said.

Sinclair said her injuries have since been downgraded to non-life threatening.

“We have located a number of witnesses,” he said of the ongoing investigation.

The driver of the van remained at the scene and is co-operating with police.

Brimley Road remains closed.
