Paramedics say a woman was struck and killed by a truck near a busy Etobicoke intersection Thursday morning.

The accident occurred shortly before 8 a.m. near the intersection of Lakeshore Boulevard and Park Lawn Road.

According to Toronto police Const. Hugh Smith, the 70-year-old woman was running across Park Lawn Road from the east side to the west side of the street when she was hit.

“We have reports from independent witnesses that she was running across, trying to beat traffic coming northbound. It appears she may have tripped and fallen on to the roadway into the southbound lanes where she was struck by a southbound truck here. She was dragged for quite a distance," Smith said.

The International roll-off bin truck that struck the woman was driven by a 25-year-old man, police said.

The area was closed to traffic as police investigated, however all lanes reopened at around 11:30 a.m.
