A man has died following an industrial accident in the city’s west end Thursday afternoon.

Paramedics and firefighters were called to a worksite at Eglinton and Blackthorn avenues, just west of Caledonia Road, around 2:45 p.m after some sort of structural collapse, Toronto EMS said.

A bystander near the scene told CP24 she heard a loud smash at a construction site that has been active for several months. Following the sound, workers could be seen frantically digging to try and free one of their colleagues.

A spokesperson for Toronto Fire Services confirmed that one male was trapped beneath the dirt following the collapse.

A short time later firefighters confirmed the male had died.

The Ontario Ministry of Labour is on scene and is investigating the incident.
