Firefighters have managed to free a construction worker who became trapped in a trench at a work site near Lawrence and Bayview avenues Tuesday afternoon.

The man was working on a leaky basement when the ground gave way and partially buried him in the trench, a co-worker said at the scene on Mildenhall Road.

His co-workers attempted to free him until firefighters arrived to take over the rescue effort.

A Toronto Fire Services spokesperson said the worker was trapped up to the shoulder level and was conscious and breathing as firefighters worked to dig him out.

He was successfully freed at around 3 p.m. and transported to hospital with minor injuries.

He is expected to make a full recovery.
