A construction worker was lucky to escape with just minor injuries after a trench collapsed on him at a home in Thornhill Saturday.

Emergency crews were called to the home on Worth Boulevard, west of Bathurst Street around 1 p.m.

When they arrived they found the 45-year-old man trapped in an eight-foot trench that had collapsed around him.

Firefighters said the contractor was installing a basement door on the outside of the home when the trench collapsed.

Police closed traffic to the area as responders worked to free the man with concerned passersby looking on.

The man was trapped waist-deep for about an hour until crews could free him. He was then taken to hospital with minor injuries.
