Premier Kathleen Wynne is refusing to say whether or not the planned Scarborough subway extension could be revisited should Torontonians elect a mayor intent on abandoning it in favour of other priorities.

The province has already committed $1.48 billion towards the cost of extending the Bloor-Danforth line into the burgeoning east-end suburb with the federal government kicking in another $660 million.

The remainder of the $2.5 billion cost is being covered by a 1.6 per cent dedicated property tax hike.

The proposed subway extension, however, may not be a done deal with mayoral candidates Olivia Chow and David Soknacki campaigning on scrapping it in favour of a less expensive light-rail transit line.

“It is the plan that is in place but as with all of these things we have to work in cooperation with the municipalities,” Wynne told reporters on Friday when asked about whether the subway could be revisited. “There is no point in pretending that there doesn’t have to be a good working relationship with the municipalities.”

Chow, who has led the mayoral race in every poll to date, has said that she would use the provincial funding to build an LRT line and then put the money collected through the property tax hike towards the cost of building a downtown relief subway line.

When asked if the provincial money would be available for an LRT as opposed to a subway, Wynne said she would “not go into those hypotheticals.”

Wynne then clarified that the province’s commitment to building transit in Toronto won’t be conditional on the outcome of the Oct. 27 election.

“Our commitment to building transit is not theoretical; it is absolutely real,” she said. “Obviously we will have to work with whoever is in that leadership role, but I sincerely hope that whoever is the mayor of Toronto, whoever is the mayor of Mississauga, whoever is the chair of York Region will work with us in a collaborative way to make the best decisions for their residents.”

Mayoral candidates Rob Ford and John Tory have both voiced their support for the Scarborough subway publicly and have ruled out scrapping it in favour of another project.
